So wait, what exactly is a “cult movie”.  A movie about cults? A movie CREATED by cults, like a training film?  Perhaps a biopic about The Blue Oyster Cult, or maybe Ian Astbury’s Cult?

In short, cult movies are those that have yielded an intensely devoted (but relatively small) group of fans. Traditionally, cult movies are not well known outside of their tiny fanbases; but there have definitely been some notable exceptions that have managed to gain fame and make a ton of box-office dollars.   Some cult movies eventually went on to transcend their “cult status” and are now known as truly classic movies; others are more the "so bad it's good" type, and remain in obscurity years after their release.  Cult movies are perhaps best known for attracting an obsessive and elaborate subculture of fandom, hence the comparison to cults.
